Easy-to-Follow Home Recycling Tips for the Family

Easy-to-Follow Home Recycling Tips for the Family

The incessant talk about global warming, pollution, the use of fossil fuels, and the destruction of our forests has spurred more and more people to come up with innovative ideas on how they can help clean up the planet, and prevent further damage to it.

If each individual on the planet did his or her own small thing, such as recycle, it all should add up to one significant change, as well as help make a  big difference in the long term. Reusing, reducing and recycling waste needs to start at home. Here are a few recycling tips that you can easily follow at home.

Reuse Scrap Paper, and Don’t Throw Your Old Newspapers

Your old newspapers can still do a lot of helpful stuff. They can be reused for packing your valuables into your storage boxes, and can be used in your kitty litter box. Scrap paper can also reused. Use up both sides to print documents, unless you’re printing a very important office or business document. You can also send your old newspapers to a collection facility for proper recycling.

Plastic Bottles can be Recycled

Set aside an area in your garage or storage room for storing plastic bottles. If your town or city has a collection facility or pick-up point, bring your plastic bottles there, and trade them for cash.  Ice cream and yoghurt plastic containers can be reused to store candies, biscuits and other items, and may also be used for storing your kids’ crayons, pens and small toys.

How to Recycle Old Electronic Items

Ensure that all the batteries you use for your flashlights, cell phones and toys are sent to recycling centers, because throwing these in the garbage bin may harm the environment. Any broken electronic appliances or items may also be repaired and reused at home too. However, irreparable electronic items can be sold as junk, or sent to a collection facility for proper recycling and disposal.

Recycling Kitchen Waste

Kitchen waste, especially the organic ones, can be used as manure or fertilizer, once these have been placed in a compost pit. The productive use of kitchen wastes helps reduce a  town or city’s sewage and garbage problems. The tin cans which often accumulate in your kitchen can also be collected and crushed, and sent to a recycling facility.

Be Earth Friendly When Going Shopping

When shopping or going to the grocery, always bring a cloth bag, and avoid using plastic shopping bags, because these are very hard to recycle. In addition, buy goods or products that are made from recycled materials, or use recycled materials for packaging.

These are but a few of the many things that you can do to help make our world a cleaner and safer place to live in. With a lot of research and simple innovation, you can actually make a difference for the planet.

Tips About Prostate Cancer Hormone Therapy

by BlondieWrites on June 15, 2010

Tips About Prostate Cancer Hormone Therapy

What is the truth about prostate cancer hormone therapy? As a man between the age of 50 and 100 plus you may well have to ask yourself that question? Because the fact is if you live in North America you may be the 1 out of 6 men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

These tips will give you some free information and a question or two to ask your doctor if it should happen to you.

This article is not intended as medical advice, nor should it be taken as medical advice. It is for informational purposes only. As always with a physical illness you should consult your personal physician right away. Please read on for more information.

It is important for you to understand what hormonal therapy is and what it can do. The primary purpose of course is to treat prostate cancer. It does this by blocking androgens (male hormones). One such hormone is testosterone and it is one of the culprits which feed the cancer and causes the prostrate cancer to grow.

Normally what can happen when the hormonal treatment works is it will cause the tumors to shrink and slow down the spread of the malignancy. One of the questions you need to ask your doctor is to fully explain what prostate cancer hormonal therapy is and what it can do for you. More than likely he will tell you there is more than one option for the hormonal treatment.

One of the primary types of hormonal treatment is the removal of the testacies. The testes produce more than 95% of the male’s testosterone. Ironically, because the testes produce the majority of the testosterone, this treatment is classified, by the medical professionals, as hormonal treatment instead of a surgical operation.

However, the formal name of this procedure is called Orchidectomy (you know it as surgical castration). Your doctor will explain the operating team will remove your testicles through a small incision in your scrotum. The next question you need to ask the doctor is “What are the side effects of this type of hormonal therapy?”

Unfortunately your medical practitioner will explain, your natural desire for sex will be gone and you will be impotent. Also you may well experience hot flashes as this is a very common side effect of sexual castration.

However don’t give up on hormonal therapy yet. You will find when talking to your physicians there are other options or rather a different type of hormonal treatment. This treatment is called Medical Castration.

This treatment will use injections of LHRH Agonists which will turn off production of the male hormones in the testes. The good news about this procedure is it is can be effective without the surgical removal of the testicles. However, it will also reduce your sexual drive, cause impotence and the dreaded hot flashes.

But it is believed by many medical professionals the Medical Castration treatment may be reversed. This is done by discontinuing the injections. Once that has occurred the body will start producing testosterone again. Depending on what your Doctor tells you this may be a good thing or not. Especially since the testosterone is what feeds the cancer and speeds up the spread of the malignancy.

As you have read there are many things you need to talk to your Doctor about. You need a full explanation which type of prostate cancer hormonal treatment will be best for you. Once you have all the information then you will be able to make an informed decision.

Ideas for Scrapbooking Pages

by BlondieWrites on June 15, 2010

Ideas for Scrapbooking Pages

Finding ideas to apply to your scrapbooking can be such a big pain. You are faced with the prospect of creating a masterpiece, yet you don’t really know how to begin. Here are some suggestions for you to try out:

1) Color – The simplest idea for a scrapbooking page should be a color. Basing your scrapbook pages on a single color though, can be quite complex if you want it to be. There are shades to experiments with. By trying on different shades of a color, you can have variety and yet stick with the same scrapbooking idea.

Another fun scrapbooking page idea that involves colors has you researching their different interpretations. By using colors this way, you can actually have a message that means something special to you.

2) Literature – Think of your favorite piece of literature and base your scrapbook on that. Taking inspiration from books or a poem is a really good scrapbooking idea. You see, authors sometimes picture their characters and stories so vividly, that you can visualize them in your mind. By placing these images on paper, you can actually share with people something that so inspired you.

Basing your scrapbook on a piece of literature can be pretty deep for some people to take. You may have to do a bit of explaining before someone gets the message of the scrapbook. In doing so, you get to show a part of your soul to the readers. It may also inspire people to take up reading.

3) Characters –Characters abound in the world that people can take inspiration from. In using characters, you have two options:

A. Fiction – this idea for scrapbooking pages involves you taking a fictional character and using that character as an inspiration for your scrapbooking page. Contrary to what most people think, fictional characters are actually harder to research on than actual, living characters.

One reason is the fact that different people have different interpretations of them. Take Batman, for example. In the sixties, the TV series portrayed him as this campy superhero who wears grey and blue spandex. In the 1989 movie, he’s a bit more brooding, and wears protective armor. In the movie “Batman and Robin” he is portrayed as this not so brooding, talkative character who wears a rubber suit with nipples. See how different people’s perceptions of a fictional character can be?

One advantage to this, though, is the fact that you can have more freedom with this idea for a scrapbooking page. You see, not many people will question your interpretation of a fictional character.
B. Non-fiction – In this idea for a scrapbooking page, you take your inspiration from a real person. It doesn’t really matter if they are alive or dead. However, remember that people change all the time. Just take a look at Britney Spears and you’ll probably realize the meaning of this statement.

By using real persons as your inspiration, you are actually offered a whole lot of detail on their lives. However, you won’t really have the same freedom as when you are trying to do a fictional character.

4) Activities – Try getting an idea for scrapbooking pages from your favorite activity. Most guys would choose sports and stuff, and nothing’s wrong with that. However, you may want to try being different and think outside the box. Base your scrapbook on an interest which no one can really guess. In doing this, you’ll get to have additional fun by having people guess the connection of the page to the activity.

Sometimes, people tend to categorize us through our activities. However, you might want to prove to others your true depth by showing in your scrapbook that a certain activity foes not define the “whole” you.

You might want to show, using your scrapbook that even though you enjoy a particular activity, it is only a minor part of your existence and that you have a deeper facet to your personality than being a computer whiz, basketball jock and other stereotypical labels.

There you go: those are just some ideas for scrapbooking pages you might think about trying out. By trying out different things before you actually use them, you can actually see if those ideas for scrapbooking pages fit your personality.

Tips for Choosing Wedding Decorations

by BlondieWrites on June 15, 2010

Tips for Choosing Wedding Decorations

The first thing that guests notice when they attend a wedding ceremony or reception are the decorations. Therefore, every bride and groom wants to have the decorations very attractive, memorable and to have these represent the interests or the couple.

Usually, the task of choosing the wedding decorations is delegated to the bride and the female members of the family and entourage. However, it is still preferred that the groom should also help in conceptualizing the decorations to be used for the wedding.

Here are some aspects to consider when deciding on what decorations to be used in the wedding:

* Mood

Will the wedding be formal or casual? Do you want it to be traditional or contemporary? This will help in deciding what candles, flowers, balloons, and other venue enhancements will you be needing.

* Color Scheme

Consider the main color to be used for the decorations. This may be the couple’s favorite color, a color that can be associated with their hobby or the color that is preferred during the season. Make sure that the color of the decorations will go well with what the members of the entourage and the guests will be wearing.

* Site

Take pictures of the wedding site as early as possible so that you can check the pictures while considering a decorating idea.

* Time

Usually, decorations can only be set at the church and at the reception within one to two hours before the event. Therefore, you must consider decorations that don’t take much time to mount. Also, these decorations should also be taken down right after the event.

* Guests

Consider how many will attend the wedding reception and how big is the site. With the number of guests that you will be having, can you still set-up bigger decorations that will take some floor space?

If you have a large number of guests, you may just want to set-up floor decorations near the stage and dance floor where most of the program will take place. Also, you might want to opt for smaller but finely detailed table decorations.

Also consider if there will be kids who will be attending the wedding reception. Kids may get bored during the program and start playing with the decorations that can cause an unsightly mess. So you may just get decorations that are not so fragile.

Another tip, if you will be having several kids as guests, you may have a kids area, where they can mingle with other kids and where the decorations and food are more suited for their age.

* Budget

Improperly chosen decorating ideas will not look well even if these cost much. Also, choosing just two or three decorating ideas, as long as these are implemented well can make a ceremony and reception look lavish.

Also, it is not necessary to buy every item that will be used as decorations. Some professional decorators can give you information on vases, mirrors, table centerpieces, dried flower arrangements, arc ways, pedestals and plants that will only be used for one day.

With these, just adding a few candles, laces and fresh flowers will make your wedding site and reception exquisite.

A final budgeting advice, check with the wedding rite venue director if there are other weddings that will take place during the day. If so, you may want to coordinate with the couple that will be using the venue before or after you. The may agree with your decorating ideas or add some of their own, and agree to just split the decorating expenses with you.
